The darkest times of our lives, when things seem most impossible, can become the greatest times of growth and transformation when just a ray of light shines in. Wherever you find yourself today, your story is not over. You are not alone in the dark. My story began on a farm in rural Nebraska, where I learned to care for and cultivate life. My parents often took me along to visit shut-ins, hospitals, and nursing homes, which taught me the power of encouraging relationships. In my high school and college years, I often found myself listening to others share their hurts and dreams. Studying journalism in college, I learned to ask questions and appreciate stories. As I turned the page from college to career, I moved from the press room to the pulpit, where I served for 22 years as a lead pastor for two Nebraska churches – in Crete for 7 years and Gretna for 15. I listened to all sorts of people in all kinds of dark and difficult spots.
The story turned when I started a new chapter as a professional counselor, which gives me the opportunity to shine light into the dark valleys we must walk through. I have found that when we are truly heard, we experience the liberating power of love, and we begin to see a path forward through the shadows.
From the farm to the city, from reporter to pastor to counselor, I’ve lived through my share of trauma, and walked beside many who have suffered pain and loss. These experiences have opened my eyes to see the impact of our choices, and the power of relationships to pierce the darkness we face in life.
I have a Master of Divinity from Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, AL., and a Master of Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University. I have completed the first training module toward becoming a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT). I have experience helping individuals, couples, and spouses heal from unwanted sexual behaviors such as pornography and affairs.
